Rocking out in the Red Rocks
Take a hike up to Merry-Go-Round Rock—it’s an easy 6/10 mile hike which only changes 100 ft. in elevation. Most people can hike it in about 45 minutes. Check out the John Wayne tree which The Duke leaned against in a very famous photo!
Red Rock Hiking Pass: $5 per day per person
Sometimes, it’s a lot more fun to drive up Schnebly Hill to Merry-Go-Round Rock. One of our favorite ways to get there is with Pink Jeep. Your guide will tell you about the flora, the fauna, the history, and the geology of this beautiful canyon. Take Pink Jeep’s Scenic Rim tour up to Merry-Go-Round Rock. The tour leaves Uptown Sedona every two hours.
Oh, and check this out: John Wayne left his mark on Sedona…literally.
When he was filming “Tall in the Saddle” between mid-April and mid-June 1944, John Wayne performed several of his scenes up Sedona’s Schnebly Hill Road. One day, one of the crew teased John Wayne until the famous movie star picked up a piece of charcoal from the camp fire and wrote “The Duke” on the red rock canyon wall. His signature is still there, preserved forever on one of the turns to the right as you are going up the hill.
Ask your guide to point out where John Wayne signed his moniker on the canyon wall!
